Physical Literacy – Keynote Gethin Mon Thomas

Gethin ThomasMovement and physical activity have been designed out of everyday life.  The recent pandemic has exposed society’s indifference to the contribution made by movement and physical activity to:

  • human development
  • physical, mental/emotional, and social health, and wellbeing

The keynote will start by introducing Sport England’s recently published Physical Literacy consensus statement.  We will explore ‘why’ and ‘how’ we can all nurture children and young people’s relationship with movement and physical activity. Physical Literacy provides a conceptual framework from which we can challenge our policies and strategies, teacher and coach behaviour when providing opportunities and creating a safe environment for movement and physical activity and our pedagogical approaches.

Explore pedagogical principles and practice that supports learners to develop a positive relationship with movement and physical activity.

Introduce the principles of curriculum design and the learning journey focussing on the centrality of the learning intention for all teaching and learning activities.

Option 5 – Bikeability Balance for Teachers

The Bikeability ‘Balance’ module teaches riders to balance on a balance bike and can be delivered to pupils from nursery school onwards. You can use games to help riders develop cycle handling and awareness skills off road, moving the bike with their feet rather than with pedals. Riders should be ready to progress to ‘Learn to Ride’ training at the end of this module.

Aims and Objectives

By the end of the session the children will be able to:

  • Be able to put on their own helmet.
  • Get on and off a balance bike.
  • Move around and away from objects.
  • Gain coordination.
  • Be able to push and glid unaided.
  • Balance Bikes will help with motor skills.
  • Being able to stop the balance bike.
  • Gain confidence on a balance bike.
  • Progress to a pedal bike with having to not use stabalisers as a balance aid.

Course Outcomes

You will be able to confidently deliver a balance ability session and gaining knowledge on how to train your pupils to achieve the objectives. We will give you the knowledge on how to get your pupils on and off a balance bike, how a helmet should be fitted.
