Inclusion Sports Taster for Drake/Morice Town

Wednesday 01st February 2023 – A lovely morning spent at Drake Primary today with a group of their children and some children from Morice Town Primary. Today was an introduction to some Paralympic target sports. We started off with some Boccia: similar to bowls, teams compete to get their coloured balls closer to the ‘jack’ ball than the opposing team. We played a friendly round robin so that both schools had a chance to play children from the other school. Next up was New Age Kurling: this sport has been adapted from Curling to be played indoors on a flat surface. Teams take turns to deliver ‘stones’ towards the target to try to get closer to the centre than the opposition. Both sports require accuracy, control, and tactics. First off, we learned the skills and rules and then applied them in a friendly competition. We didn’t record any scores today as we agreed that sometimes it is not about winning or losing, it is more important to have some fun and learn something new. I was very impressed by how quickly all groups picked up the skills! I had such an enjoyable morning – thank you Drake Primary/Morice Town Primary and Mrs Phillips and the lovely ladies from Morice Town for arranging such lovely children for me to work with. I am looking forward to seeing you all at one of our PSSP Inclusion events soon.
