YST - Wellbeing Support & Empathy Week

A whole school approach to emotional wellbeing

It is widely recognised that a child’s emotional health and wellbeing influences their cognitive development and learning and is affected by their physical and social health. This updated guidance sets out key actions that headteachers and practitioners can take to embed a whole school approach to promoting emotional health and wellbeing. The eight principles are informed by evidence and practitioner feedback about what works with some of the practice shared based on the role of PE, sport and play.

As we get all children and young people back into school it will be important for schools to be guided by this evidence to overcome the physical, social and emotional gap many will face and think through how they use curriculum and enrichment experiences around PE and sport to get them back learning effectively.

WELLBEING GUIDANCE

Wellbeing at Home

As part of Youth Sport Trust’s Well Schools movement, we have been actively sharing and profiling practice through the community that is extending their PE and sport provision to keep children active and well at home. This could be about addressing inactivity during home schooling, wider support for mental health or social isolation concerns or hints and tips about how to keep yourself well during lockdown.

These resources are a great extension of the work you are doing through your membership offer and can be found by clicking below. If you haven’t joined the free Well Schools movement you can follow this link to access the resources and support.

Active in Mind – free workshops

As part of Children’s Mental Health Week, and recognising the increased stress and anxiety of young people being at home for another lockdown, we have taken the decision to release our brilliant Active in Mind workshops for free through our website. We have adapted the workshops normally delivered by our Athlete Mentors so that teachers or other pastoral staff can provide face to face or virtual sessions for those young people that need support for their mental health and mindset.

You will find slide decks, training matrixes and practical activities on our website, as well as the poster download for your target group and top tips videos to share with the whole school.
