Plymouth Half Marathon Schools Challenge 2015

PRESS RELEASE: Plymouth’s Half Marathon

DATE: 20/04/14

2700 PLYMOUTH PUPILS PARTICIPATE IN PLYMOUTH’S HALF MARATHON SCHOOLS’ CHALLENGE FOR CLIC SARGENT!

Schools across Plymouth took part in Plymouth’s Half Marathon Schools’ Challenge this Sunday, staged alongside the popular South West running event on Sunday 19th April.

This year the Schools’ Challenge attracted 2700 young runners, staff and parents, with a staggering 192 pupils participating from Woodford Primary School in Plympton alone! After following a 12 week programme completing a mile a week, the 2700 students, staff and parents ran their final mile on Sunday to make up their own half marathon finish. The students had a fantastic finish on the Hoe in front of thousands of spectators out in the glorious sunshine.

The schools’ running challenge was in association with CLIC Sargent for the second consecutive year. Pupils participating in the half marathon distance played an important role in fundraising for their local children’s services for young cancer patients, provided by CLIC Sargent.

Last year, the Plymouth Half Marathon School’s Challenge raised over £11,000. The fundraising by the Plymouth Schools last year could have provided 15 families free self-catering accommodation for three weeks, the average length of stay, in CLIC House, one of CLIC Sargent’s homes from home in Bristol, where many children and young people from Plymouth must travel for treatment, or it could have funded a CLIC Sargent Nurse, Social Worker and Play Specialist for a month helping families to cope with a childhood cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Georgina Reed, Fundraising Manager at CLIC Sargent, said: “CLIC Sargent were delighted to have been chosen as the official charity for the Plymouth Half Marathon Schools’ Challenge 2015. We were thrilled to see so many young runners participating on Sunday and raising vital funds to provide clinical, practical, emotional and financial support to children and young people with cancer.”

The event would not have been possible without the Plymouth School Sports Partnership who were involved with the event from the very beginning. Lance and his team ensured that the build up to the day and the event itself inspires the young runners to take on the challenge and continue running even when the event is over.
