Sainsbury's School Games Level 2 Hockey

This year's Plymouth SSP primary hockey was not only well attended but also of a very high standard. With 11 schools taking part and 110 eager young hockey players it was close throughout the pool and final stages.

Each team took part in a pool play off before entering the cup, shield, plate and saucer competitions enabling all teams to gain extra experience and the chance to win a medal.

At the end of stage one King's School, Compton C of E and Keyham Barton entered the cup event with the knowledge that they had already gained a place at the level 3 winter school games, however this didn't detract from the competiton as they were now fighting it out for the now coveted gold, silver and bronze school games medals.

In the shield event Oreston, Salisbury Road and Old Priory had even more to gain as they were fighting for the final place at the level 3 games, along with a medal for their efforts.

The plate competition saw St Peters RC, Widewell and Hyde Park competing for a Plymouth SSP medal, whilst in the saucer event it was Woodford and Cathedral who were doing the same.

After another hour of very high standard competition Woodford took the first of the medals beating Cathedral 2-1 after extra time, whilst in the plate event Widewell took the other set of Plymouth SSP medals.

Oreston were the final team to snatch one of the level 3 games places and our first school games medals after drawing with Salisbury Road and beating Old Priory. It was also very close in the cup event with Compton finishing on 4 points after a loss and draw, Keyham Barton took the silver medals after securing a win and a loss, whilst Kings took the gold spot after a win and draw.

Well done to all the teams involved and a big thank you to the leaders/umpires from DHSB who did an excellent job throughout the afternoon.
