PSSP Primary Athletics 2020/21

The Plymouth Primary Athletics returned this year after a break due to Covid-19. The format was to be different this year with schools given an hour and a half time slot to compete in their field events and also on the track. All athletes took part in every field event as a whole team, however only one boy and one girl from each school would be scored in each event. Athletes were allowed to be scored in one field, one track and a relay race only.

There were 20 schools who took part, with year 6’s attending on the Wednesday and then year 4’s on the Friday. Schools were broken up into smaller groups of around 5 schools and whilst some were on the track, the others were on the field. Races were split into girls and boy’s heats.

The field events were - Vertical Jump, Long Jump and Vortex Throw

The track events were – 70m, 90m, 200m, 4x60m Relay + 5x80m Relay 

The first event to get the Primary Athletics started on the track was the boys 70m race. Meanwhile some other schools went to their field events. The weather was brilliant for both days of events with dry warm sunshine. The athletes were trying their best to get points for their schools and were brilliant in encouraging not only their fellow team mates, but also other schools that were competing. There were plenty of smiling faces from both the athletes and their teachers and it was absolutely fantastic to see a live sporting event taking part in a Covid-19 secure environment.

We split the schools into minor, inter and major schools depending on the number of children on-roll within that school which is how the results and awards are given out.

Congratulations to all the winners and a massive well done to everyone who took part! A huge thank-you to the young leaders from Notre Dame who helped on the track, as well as the school staff who helped with results and timings on the track.
