YST Response to the 2024 King's Speech

King Charles III told Parliament this week that a children’s wellbeing bill will be introduced to raise standards in education and promote children’s wellbeing.

The children’s wellbeing bill will “put children and their wellbeing at the centre of the education and children’s social care systems, and make changes so they are safe, healthy, happy and treated fairly”, a briefing note from Downing Street said.

Responding to yesterday’s speech, Youth Sport Trust CEO Ali Oliver MBE said:

“The introduction of a 'children’s wellbeing bill' is really welcome news to the Youth Sport Trust and many other charities and organisations calling for urgent action to tackle the national crisis in children’s health and happiness.  READ MORE

Children’s sugar consumption halved

The amount of sugar consumed by children from soft drinks in the UK halved in the three years after the announcement of a sugar tax in 2016, a study has found.

The tax, which came into force in April 2018, has been so successful in improving people’s diets that experts have said an expansion to cover other high sugar food and drink products is now a “no-brainer”. READ MORE

Tackling the PE Enjoyment Gap

In May, Studio You hosted an engaging 30-minute live broadcast to help change the way girls see being active in school and beyond.

The transmision was watched by over 1,000 schools and it's now available on demand (and totally free), ready for teachers to view with their students at a time that works for them.

So, if you're a secondary school teacher, just log in or register on the Studio You website, where you'll find the video in the 'Teacher Hub'.

It’ll help students discover there is so much variety when it comes to getting active as there's no 'one-size-fits-all' mould that they need to strive towards.

Instead, we encourage young girls and women to be active for fun, friendship or to simply try something new as we believe there’s something for everyone.

We also want to spread the message about the many benefits physical activity brings to students. These include a boost in confidence, improved behaviour and academic performance and an increased engagement in school.
