Primary PE and School Sport 2024-25                  Your Questions Answered

This event featured experts from the Department for Education (DfE) and Youth Sport Trust who provided a comprehensive explanation of the newly published guidelines, conditions of grant, and best practice for the upcoming year WATCH NOW

NEW - Digital mandatory reporting will open from beginning of June 2025 - 31st July 2025.

  • Head Teachers and Governors are still ultimately responsible for how the funding is spent so confirmation/sign off from them is still required on the new digital report.
  • You still need to publish it on your websites as well. You can download a PDF after you have completed the form online and then publish this. Download it straight away as it will only be available for 6 months.
  • When you have submitted your report, if there are concerns about what you have spent on, schools will be contacted and it will be investigated by the DFE.
  • Funding to be spent on the 5 key areas but it doesn’t have to be spent across all 5 areas.
  • The only instance in which supply can be funded from the premium is if the PE Coordinator (or other) is attending a course which will give them a qualification to teach PE or a particular sport.
  • Trusts/LEAs set the figure which then dictates what capital expenditure is.
  • There is going to be a review of the PE curriculum and assessment process next year.
  • They are hoping to release a PDF of questions that you will be asked in the online reporting tool ahead of time so you can prepare your answers.
  • The premium should not be used to pay for salaries - for members of staff who are present in schools all year round. Coaches to provide intervention sessions for just a few weeks/term is okay.
  • MAT’s can pool the funding but each individual school should benefit, it can't all go to one or some.
  • If you have concerns about how the funding is being spent (i.e. on PPA cover) - your Head Teacher and Governor are responsible - raise your concerns (create a paper trail).
  • On the online report - it still needs to add up to 100% spent.
  • FAQ's will be published by AfPE shortly and we will share these with you.
  • There are collated real-life working Examples of effective PE and sport premium spending (PDF, 111 KB, 4 pages)] to help understand ways this can be implemented.

Premier League Anti-Bullying Week Resources for Teachers

The Premier League has teamed up with the Anti-Bullying Alliance to launch ‘Choose Respect’, a free, curriculum-linked teaching resource aimed at supporting schools in promoting respect and tackling bullying. Available for download on the Premier League Primary Stars website from the 6th November launch date, the resource is designed for teachers of children aged 7-11 and uses football-themed activities to spark classroom discussions on respect for all, regardless of gender, race, or ability.

Key features of the ‘Choose Respect’ teaching pack include:

  1. Interactive lesson plans that encourage pupils to reflect on their behaviour and build respectful relationships.
  2. Football scenarios that emphasise respect both on and off the pitch.
  3. Practical worksheets to help children understand and apply key concepts in their daily lives.
  4. A film reinforcing positive behaviour, accompanied by a word bank of terms such as acceptance and conflict.

This new resource is part of the Premier League Primary Stars programme, which has been providing teachers with free, high-quality materials across a range of subjects since 2017. With over 650 resources available, Primary Stars aims to harness children’s love of football to promote active learning and essential life skills.

The National Sector Partners Group (NSPG) response to the Chancellor’s Autumn Budget 2024

A step to “fix the foundations” but sport, recreation and physical activity sector left absent from the role it can play in supporting the economy and the health of the nation.

The Chancellor has said that this “Budget marks an end to short-term ism" with promises to “fix the NHS, rebuild Britain (and) restore economic credibility”. However, the Chancellor has missed an opportunity to provide crucial detail about the significant role sport, recreation and physical activity can play in driving a healthier and more productive and prosperous nation,

We know economic growth is intrinsically linked to the health and activity levels of the nation. The announcements made yesterday build on the vision to develop a 10-year NHS plan that shifts healthcare from hospital to community, and from treatment to prevention – two areas in which our sector can play a significant role. We will continue to work with the Government to understand how they will unlock this potential of our sector as further consultation takes place and details emerge.

Further announcements of funding to support children and young people through investment in breakfast clubs and support for elite and grassroots sport through investment in multi-use facilities are welcomed by our sector, as a way to encourage greater daily physical activity for all generations. Integral to this is a highly skilled sport and physical activity sector workforce, and the recognition today of the role of skills development in driving economic growth is positive. READ MORE
