Youth Matters and the role of sport and physical activity

The publication of Youth Matters, the Government’s first national youth strategy in 15 years, sets an important direction for how we support young people over the next decade.

Sport England explain that it also reinforces a clear message: if we are serious about improving young people’s wellbeing, connection and opportunities, sport and physical activity must be central to that ambition.

Sport England’s executive responds to the Government’s new national youth strategy and explains why sport and physical activity must be central to its success. This response is not simply a welcome of the strategy, but a statement of intent.

It sets out why Youth Matters is important to our work, what young people have told us they need, and how our sector can help turn the strategy’s ambitions into meaningful change in places and communities across the country.

Schools Volleyball Tournament

Following the success of the previous event, there is the possibility of hosting another volleyball tournament on Monday 26 January, from 4:00–5:30 pm, at the YMCA.

I appreciate that many schools have CPD training scheduled on Mondays; however, based on recent feedback, this appears to be the preferred day due to other fixtures and sporting commitments later in the week.

The volleyball tournament will be open to Year 8, 9, 10, and 11 teams for both boys and girls. The format will be 3- or 4-a-side, with the intention of running the event across four courts, as outlined below:

  • Court 1: Year 8 & 9 Boys
  • Court 2: Year 10 & 11 Boys
  • Court 3: Year 8 & 9 Girls
  • Court 4: Year 10 & 11 Girls

Contingency plans will be in place should any teams be unable to attend, and the format can be adjusted as necessary.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I would appreciate it if you could reply to indicate your interest.

This Girl Can Event

Back in 2015, This Girl Can launched to encourage and celebrate women of all backgrounds, shapes and sizes getting active while 'doing their thing' –  that is, without caring about how they did it, the way they looked while being active or even how sweaty they got – so today, we wanted to say a huge thanks to you, our amazing community, for your continued support over the past 11 years.

This month we'll also be celebrating We Like the Way You Move with a This Girl Can Webinar on Wednesday 21 January.

Join us from midday for a one-hour session in which we’ll be sharing our plans for the We Like the Way You Move campaign in early 2026 across paid media, PR and some exciting new media partnerships.

We'll also take you through a range of new resources and editable assets that you can use to make the campaign relevant to your audience or communities.

Together, we can help more women feel like sport and physical activity is for them in 2026 and beyond!

Book your free space - This Girl Can Webinar, Wednesday 21 January 12:00 - 13:00

Help us discover the next generation of Lionesses

Do you know a pupil who is showing footballing ability, or simply has the potential to grow?

Our Discover My Talent referral window is now open, so please click the link below and put your pupils forward before 6th February 2026.

Since 2021, over 7,000 young players have been referred, with 1 in 5 progressing into the England Talent System at some stage. Many of these players may never have been discovered without a teacher who believed in them, so don’t miss out on the chance to open the door for the next generation.
