  • PSSP Primary & Special Schools Girls Football

    Published 09/10/25

Wednesday 8th October 2025 – Today was our first ever Girls only PSSP Inclusive Football event! Run by girls for girls this event was one to remember. We had 9 schools with us today for our friendly tournament aimed at promoting teamwork, respect and most importantly – having lots of fun! Representing their schools today were children from Montpelier, Plympton St. Maurice, St. Paul’s RC, Pennycross, Bickleigh Down, Stoke Damerel, Elburton, College Road and Cann Bridge. As they arrived and I had the opportunity to chat to the children, it soon became very apparent that there were a lot of nerves this morning but I am thrilled to say that as soon as we were underway – this was quickly replaced by excitement. We had an all-female team of Sports Leaders with us from Stoke Damerel Community College to referee and score the games but also to be positive role models for the younger girls. They did an incredible job and the children had a great time with you so thank you for all your hard work today. This event is a round-robin  so every school gets to play all of the others. 5 points are awarded for a win, 3 points for a draw and 1 point for a loss. Each team played 9 games in total – there were quite a few tired legs by the end. Once all games were completed, we finalised the scores and we had a certificate presentation in the club-house. I definitely needed my maths skills today – our teams were so evenly matched that we had a large number of drawn matches so 3 schools finished on the same amount of points.

In order to establish the final order, I looked back at the number of goals each team had scored over the duration of the tournament… Congratulations to College Road who were our overall winners today and to Bickleigh Down who were runners up by just 1 point. Well done to everyone who took part today, I really hope that you all enjoyed it and would be keen to come back again. I am definitely going to host more of these events – I had the best time! Check out the PSSP calendar for more inclusive events.

  • PSSP Primary Boccia

    Published 01/10/25

Wednesday 01st October 2025 - A great morning of sport today at Plympton Academy – our first (for this school year) PSSP Primary Inclusion Boccia event was hosted by 7 of our fabulous Sports Leaders. 5 schools attended with 9 teams to take part in our friendly event, aimed at developing new skills and having a lot of fun. On arrival, Prince Rock, Plympton St. Mary’s, Old Priory, Plympton St. Maurice and Cann Bridge were welcomed and introduced to the sport by our leaders. With a little time for practice, we then dove straight in with playing some games against another team. Boccia is a Paralympic sport that is played from a seated position. It is a target game that involves accuracy and strategy and more importantly, is a lot of fun. We don’t keep any scores at these events, instead the focus is on having fun, meeting other children from different schools and developing our target skills. On arrival the children often seem a little nervous but once we are underway, it is great to see so many smiling faces of children enjoying being active and learning something new. I would like to say a huge thank you to our Plympton Academy leaders – you were so welcoming and really engaged with the children. A big thank you as well to Mrs Walpole for your help this morning as well -very much appreciated. Thank you as well to all of the staff who brought their children along today – I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Check out the PSSP website for more upcoming Inclusion events.

  • KS1 Cross Country event

    Published 29/09/25

The first event of the new academic year kicked off with the KS1 Cross-country. We had around 90 children take part in the event held at central park in beautiful sunshine. Children started arriving full of excitement, eagerly awaiting their race.

The first race was the Year 1 boys race, this was one lap of the whole course which was roughly 400m in length, this was then followed by the Year 1 Girls race. Next was the Year 2 races which required two laps of the course (roughly 800m). These races were very close, and it was very impressive to see that some children didn’t stop running during the whole course or even slow down a lot! All children who finished received a sticker which they proudly wore.

A huge congratulations to everyone who took part and a special well done to the top 3 finishers from each race who walked away with a medal. Thank you to Plymouth City Council for allowing us to use the facilities and Plymouth Argyle community trust who provided some excellent leaders to assist with the event.

    Published 29/09/25

Wednesday 24th September 2025 – What a glorious day for some Football! Today we have 5 schools attend in the sunshine for the first of our PSSP Inclusion Football events. Cann Bridge, Plympton Academy, Tor Bridge High, Stoke Damerel and Devonport High School for Boys all came along to take part in our friendly tournament which focuses on Teamwork, Respect and fun. We have a slightly different format that we utilise to support one player on each team: down either side of the pitch, we create a channel which means that 1 player can play unopposed and support their team from there. This works incredibly well to develop confidence and as a team tactic. Throughout the morning we use a round-robin format so that each team gets to play everyone else. 5 points are awarded for a win/ 3 points for a draw and 1 point for a loss. Once all of the matches are complete, we tally the scores, announce the results and everyone receives a well-earned certificate. I absolutely loved reading out these results today!! Huge congratulations to Cann Bridge who were our overall winners today! Tied on points with Stoke Damerel but in the end they took the win because of the total number of goals they had scored throughout the tournament. Well done to everyone who took part today, I really hope you enjoyed it and would be keen to come back. I would like to say a very special thank you to the Sports Leaders from Stoke Damerel who once again did a fantastic job at scoring and refereeing all of the matches. Check out the PSSP events calendar to see what is coming up and next and don’t forget to sign up. I will see you all at our next one.

  • Get Fishing

    Published 25/09/25

Last Friday 4 children from Compton Primary and 4 children from Leigham Primary School were invited to take part in a ‘Get Fishing’ event. This was following the children taking part in the ‘Reel Education’ programme within school which is funded by the PSSP and the Angling Trust and can be used as one of your coaching days.

This event was hosted at Filham lake in Ivybridge which is part of the Plymouth and District Coarse  Angling Club. It is a beautiful lake and full of fish. When the children arrived, they were greeted by angling coaches Josh from the PSSP and Chris from the fishing club. After a quick health and safety briefing, children were given a quick demonstration on how to use the equipment and how to hook maggots and sweetcorn.

Following this, children were shown how to read the floats and bites as well as striking fish and finally how to safely handle the fish and unhook them. The children were very keen to try it themselves!

After an initial slow start (2 fish in the first 10 minutes), everyone started catching fish. The children caught Roach, Rudd, Perch, Hybrids and even a carp which gave a good pull! The session lasted around 90 minutes and every fish was placed into a keepnet to be looked at after the session and then safely returned into the lake.

The children seemed to have a fantastic time and caught over 100 fish between them! Some enjoyed it so much they didn’t even want to stop for lunch!

A huge well done to all who took part, certainly some future anglers in the making! And a massive thank you to P.A.D.C.A.C who allowed us to use the venue and have Chris for support.

We will be looking to host many more of these opportunities in the future, if you would like to book then please contact – j.gilbert@sjhcsc.co.uk

  • Plympton Family Cross Country 2025

    Published 22/09/25

Thursday 18th September 2025 – It was windy but thankfully dry this afternoon as Old Priory, Chaddlewood and Plympton St. Maurice competed in our annual Plympton Family Cross Country event. As well as show casing some of the vast talent that our young people have, this was an opportunity for us to celebrate some of the schools games values: Self Belief and Determination. We had 55 children taking part and every one of them was determined to do their best and finish the course. It is quite a deceptive course and can be challenging to complete the 2 laps: for the Y3/4 races, the course is just under 1 mile and for the Y5/6 runners, it is just over 1 mile with the finish line being uphill for everyone—who would do that?! Well done to every one of you—all of your teachers and family that came to cheer you on were so proud of you and they were great races to watch. As the runners came over the line they were given a place card and these were collated by their staff—the top 4 runners from all schools were counted and the school with the overall lowest score for the boys and girls were the winners. Congratulations to Old Priory who took the top team spot in the Y5/6 Girls race, the Y5/6 Boys race and the Y3/4 Boys race.

Congratulations as well to Plympton St. Maurice who took the top spot in the Y3/4 Girls race. Excellent performances all round! Congratulations as well to Chaddlewood who definitely put in tough challenge and really forced the other runners to be their best. Well done to all of the children who took part today – you should be incredibly proud of yourselves no matter what positioned you finished and I really hope you enjoyed it. A full table of results can be found below. I would like to say a special thank you to the young leaders from Heles school who volunteered to be our marshals and hares—you did a great job, thank you. Thank you as well to Ms Pullyblank for arranging such high calibre leaders and supporting me with the scoring. I’m already looking forward to seeing you all at our next PSSP event. Wednesday 17th September 2025 – What a start to the 2025-2026 PSSP Inclusive Sports programme! 6 schools attended to compete in our friendly tournament aimed at promoting teamwork, respect and having lots of fun.

Represented today were Courtlands, Yealmpstone Farm, College Road, Holy Cross, Pennycross and Eggbuckland Vale – there were a few nervous faces on arrival but these soon turned into pink cheeks and smiles (despite the wet/chilly conditions). After a brief welcome, they were soon off to their pitches ready to play. I am incredibly fortunate at these events to have the outstanding support from the Sports Leaders at Stoke Damerel Secondary School – they referee and score all of the games but also support the children/teams and are absolutely brilliant at it! This event is a round-robin  so every school gets to play all of the others. 5 points are awarded for a win, 3 points for a draw and 1 point for a loss. Once all of the games are played, the scores are collated and we present the children with their certificates on the main pitch. There were some close games today, we had a few drawn matches and some schools finished on the same points overall so we needed to look at the number of goals scored by each of them to determine the final order. Congratulations to Pennycross who were the overall winners today! Well done to everyone who took part, I really hope you enjoyed it as much as I did and would be keen to come back again. Check out the PSSP website for more upcoming Inclusion events.

  • PSSP OAA Week at Mount Edgcumbe 2025

    Published 16/07/25

After having to cancel last year’s OAA event, this year was eagerly awaited by staff and students. The weather was perfect with wall-to-wall sunshine and a gentle breeze although at times a little hot! The children were  welcomed at admirals hard onto the Cremyll ferry in which they cross over to Mount Edgcumbe Country park. Following a small walk towards the beach they made their bases for the day and were straight onto the tug of war rope! The tug of war rope is a firm favourite with the children and certainly a strong warp up for the day.

After a quick drink, children were sent to their first activity of the day. There were four activities on offer in which groups rotated between. They were orienteering, team building, sport/games and beach art. After the first two sessions we paused for a lunch break before completing the last two. There were plenty of smiling and tired faces by the end of the day after a full day of exercise and activity but some still had energy for a final tug of war before walking back to get on the ferry back to Plymouth. A huge well done to all the children who attended, we hope you had a great day!  A massive thank you to Mount Edgcumbe for allowing us to use the park and Notre Dame for providing fantastic leaders all week! We look forward to doing it all again in 2026!

  • PSSP Primary Disc Golf

    Published 04/07/25

Wednesday 02nd July 2025 – What a fantastic day! Today was our annual Primary Disc Golf event at Plympton Academy hosted by some of our talented Sports Leaders. A bright and early start to set up our 12 hole course ready for 20 teams/10 schools. 100 children participated today, representing St. Matthew’s, Austin Farm, Ford, Montpelier, Old Priory, Chaddlewood, Yealmpstone Farm, Mary Dean’s, Bickleigh Down and Plympton St. Maurice. Half of the teams took part in the morning and the rest joined us for the afternoon tee off. After a quick training session on how to throw the disc and putt, we were underway. This event is run with a shot-gun start so each team starts on a different hole and then all move round once they have completed that hole. There is a 8 shot maximum with the idea being to complete each hole in as few shots as possible, just like Golf. Alongside the children’s event, we also had a competition for the staff – who it turns out, are definitely more competitive! There were several prestigious categories to compete for: overall winning team; lowest scoring boy; lowest scoring girl and lowest scoring female and male staff. It was fantastic to see so many children (and adults) enjoying being outside and actively playing. With a mammoth amount of scores in hand at the end of the day, it was off to the computer for me to work out who had won… Congratulations to the St. Matthews’ ‘Atlas’ team who took the top spot in the team category; Talulah from Montpelier for winning the lowest scoring girl; Josh from Ford who won the lowest scoring boy title. Congratulations to Mr. Stein for taking first place in the male staff event and to Mrs Pearce who took the title for the women’s event. Well done to all of our winners – it was my absolute pleasure to visit your schools this morning to drop off all of your prizes. I would like to say a huge thank you to a few people: first off to the fantastic group of sports leaders from Plympton Academy (pictured above) – you were absolutely brilliant with the children and they had such a great time because of it; to the Plympton Academy site team for their help setting up (and also putting in a valiant shift retrieving Discs from various rooftops) and the PE Department for all of your help preparing and on the day; to Tamsin (PSSP) for helping me set up and run the event – I am so grateful to you all! Thank you to all of the staff who brought their teams along – I really hope you enjoyed the event too and I can’t wait to do it all again next year.
