  • PSSP Spirit of the Games Rowing 2026

    Published 26/06/26

Thursday 25th June 2026 – What an incredible morning! Today we hosted the ‘Spirit of the Games Rowing’ challenge, supporting the Strength of Spirit Games on Plymouth Hoe. With the temperature set to reach incredible highs today, we moved the rowing machines into the shade of the marquee with some industrial style fans so we were all sorted. Each year the British Armed Forces, supported by Plymouth City Council and the Royal Marines Charity, host a rehabilitation triathlon for veterans of the armed forces. The Plymouth School Sports Partnership organise and host an accompanying event for children from military families. 6 children from each school were invited along to take part in 3 different challenges: a 100m sprint/a 2 minute row and a 6 minute team relay challenge. With school closures due to temperatures we had 13 schools attend today but it did nothing to dull any noise and excitement – the marquee was absolutely buzzing with excitement.

Once again we were supported by an amazing group of Sports Leaders from Devonport High School for Girls: they greeted the teams on arrival, checked names and led on all of the races. Before we knew it we were underway and the results were coming in thick and fast.  Once all of the races were completed and the numbers were being crunched, our sports leaders gave every child who participated their very own medal, certificate and a goodie bag (courtesy of Samworth Brothers). Making the most of the shade, we stayed in the marquee to announce the winners (insert drum roll please)…Congratulations to Emily and Harry (both from Elburton  Primary) for rowing 100m in the fastest time and Emily being fastest overall. Harry also took the top prize for rowing the greatest distance in 2mins for the boys and congratulations to Betsy (St. Andrew’s) for winning this round in the Girls category.

To calculate the overall winning team, we combined all of their teams’ individual distances over 2 minutes with their team relay distance. A huge congratulations to the team from Elburton who were the overall winners on the day and the recipients of the coveted shield. Well done to everyone who took part today, it was incredible to see wo many smiling faces from children enjoying  being physically active and competing. Once we had all enjoyed some snacks from the Samworth team, schools were invited to stick around to take part in some of the other activities laid on by the Council: from simulators to field gun, entertainment and music on the main stage. What a fantastic morning! I would like to say a huge thank you to some very special people who helped significantly to make this event such a success: firstly to the sports leaders from DHSG and their teachers – you were amazing and the children had the best time; to my colleagues Jan and Anna for all their help and support throughout the day; to Steven and Sara from Plymouth City Council for everything you do to make this event happen; to the Samworth Brothers for providing the icing on the cake with a goody bag of treats for the children and last but not least to Tom and the team from the Royal Marines. Thank you all so much! I can’t wait to do it all again next year and I hope to see you all there.

    Published 25/06/26

Today, we hosted a Primary School golf event at The Plymouth Golf Centre, featuring both the Super 6 competition and a Year 3/4 Tri-Golf festival.

A range of engaging stations were set up for the Tri-Golf activities, allowing pupils to develop their skills through fun and varied challenges. The Super 6 event also provided a great opportunity for children to experience a more competitive format in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Despite the very warm weather, all pupils showed great enthusiasm, energy, and resilience throughout the morning. It was brilliant to see so many smiling faces and such positive participation.

We would like to say a huge thank you to all staff and the leaders from Lipson Co-operative Academy who supported the event and ensured everything ran smoothly. Your help was greatly appreciated.

  • Y3/4 Mini Red Tennis - 2026

    Published 19/06/26

On Wednesday 17th June we held the Mini Red Tennis event for year 3 and 4 pupils at the Plymouth Life Centre which provided an exciting opportunity for young players to develop their tennis skills in a fun and supportive environment. This format is designed to introduce children to competitive play while focusing on teamwork, enjoyment, and basic technique.

Each team is made up of four players: two girls and two boys, encouraging inclusivity and equal participation. Matches are played on smaller courts using softer red balls, making the game more accessible and allowing players to build confidence as they learn to rally, serve, and score.

The event promoted key values such as sportsmanship, cooperation, and respect, alongside improving hand-eye coordination, agility, and tactical awareness.

Overall, the Mini Red Tennis event is a fantastic introduction to competitive sport, helping pupils to develop skills, make new friends, and enjoy being active in a positive and encouraging setting.

  • PSSP Primary & Special Schools Football

    Published 18/06/26

Wednesday 17th June 2026 – A little bit of drizzly rain wasn’t going to stop us this morning for our PSSP Inclusion Football event. 4 teams (Austin Farm, Cann Bridge, Courtlands and Montpelier) joined us for a morning of Football but more specifically an opportunity to have some fun being active. Although the games are competitive, the spirit of this event is very much focused on teamwork, respect and determination, rather than winning at all costs. I find these events to be a wonderful opportunity to witness social connections and mutual respect between schools/children – it is fantastic to see so many smiles. As we were only a few schools today, we decided to forgo the usual round-robin format and instead we played 2 rounds of friendly games so that everyone played each twice. Once again I was fortunate enough to have the support from the amazing Sports Leaders from Stoke Damerel – they refereed our games and coached the children: you really are a credit to your school, thank you all! At the end of the morning, we celebrated with a presentation of certificates before everyone headed back to their schools. Well done to all of the children who participated today, you were great! Thank you to all of the teachers/staff who brought their teams along – I hope you enjoyed it as well. Check out the PSSP website for more upcoming Inclusion events.

Throughout the morning, the focus remained on enjoyment, participation, and celebrating progress rather than competition.

  • Coaching Day at High View

    Published 11/06/26

Today we are at High View Primary School delivering a fantastic range of activities to the year 5 and 6 children. Due to a last-minute change of plans because of the weather, we had to move indoors instead of running our planned outdoor sessions.

The children have adapted brilliantly and are enjoying a fun-filled day of Tangrams, Boccia, and Indoor Archery. These activities are helping to develop teamwork, problem-solving skills, focus, and coordination, while ensuring everyone stays active and engaged despite the wet weather.

A huge well done to all of the year 6 and year 5 pupils for their enthusiasm and positive attitude today 👏👌

  • PSSP Secondary & Special Schools Football

    Published 11/06/26

Wednesday 10th June 2026 – Today was another of our PSSP Secondary Inclusion Football events at Harper’s. 8 teams came along to take part in our friendly yet competitive event which focuses on Teamwork, Respect and fun. Represented today were All Saint’s, Coombe Dean, Tor Bridge High, Plympton Academy and Cann Bridge. We have a slightly different format that we utilise to support one player on each team at these events: down either side of the pitch, we create a channel which means that 1 player can play unopposed and support their team from there. This works incredibly well to develop confidence and as a team tactic. Throughout the morning we use a round-robin format so that each team gets to play everyone else. 5 points are awarded for a win/ 3 points for a draw and 1 point for a loss. Once again we were fortunate enough to be supported by the amazing Sports Leaders from Stoke Damerel – they referee and score all of our games as well as supporting the teams and making sure the event runs smoothly so everyone can have a good time – thank you so much Leaders and thank you to Miss Plumpton for organising them for me. At the end of the morning, when all the games have been played, it is my pleasure to announce the results and award some well-earned certificates. Congratulations to Coombe Dean who were our overall winners today and well done to everyone who took part – you all played brilliantly! Thank you to all of the teachers/staff for bringing your teams along and for braving the rain with me – can’t wait to see you all at the next one.

  • Primary Inclusion Archery 2026

    Published 05/06/26

Friday 05th June 2026 – What an exciting morning of sport at Old Priory Junior Academy. I had the pleasure of working with the Y6 Sports Leaders today to get them ready to deliver our PSSP Primary Inclusion Archery event. 7 teams from PSSP schools across the city came along to take part in our fun festival for children in mainstream and special schools. Children from Cann Bridge, Old Priory, Leigham, Courtlands, Plympton St. Maurice, Chaddlewood and St. Matthew’s all came along to learn some new skills and compete in different personal challenge style events. As each team arrived they were introduced to the young leaders they would be working with all morning and they were taken through the key points of how to use the equipment; after a few quick practice arrows, we were straight in to the competition with each child having 3 chances to score as highly as possible with 3 arrows. Instead of competing against others, this personal challenge event is designed to encourage the children to improve at their own individual pace – striving to score more points with 3 arrows over several rounds. While they were waiting for their turn, there were Archery worksheets for the children to complete and a ‘school crest’ challenge which resulted in some very creative designs. After the highest score competition, each of the leaders took their group through some fun games and challenges. I would like to say a huge thank you to our leaders today – you were fantastic with the children and really ensured that they all had a great time!

Thank you as well to Ms. Roberts for all of her help in organising this event and to Jacob (PSSP) for all of this support and some creative art work with the ‘school crest activity’. Thank you to all of the staff that brought their teams along today – I hope that you enjoyed watching our new archers as much as I did. I look forward to seeing you all at another event very soon.

A Day of Inclusive, High‑Energy Sport

New Age Kurling is an adapted indoor version of the traditional winter sport, designed so that every child can take part. Its emphasis on accuracy, strategy, and cooperation made it an instant hit across all year groups.

Throughout the day, PSSP coaches introduced pupils to the equipment, and set up friendly challenges that encouraged pupils to work together and cheer one another on.

    Year Group Highlights

    • Year 6 — Showed fantastic teamwork, tactical thinking, and quickly picking up the technique.

    • Year 5 — Brought brilliant enthusiasm, turning every round into a lively contest full of encouragement and teamwork.

    • Year 4 — Demonstrated impressive focus and determination, many trying the sport for the first time.

    • Year 3 — Enjoyed a fun, accessible introduction to the sport, celebrating every successful slide with huge smiles and cheers.

    Building Skills Beyond Sport

While the day was packed with fun, pupils also strengthened key skills such as:

    • Teamwork — Working in groups to plan their shots

    • Resilience — Learning from missed attempts and trying again

    • Coordination — Developing control and precision with each slide

    • Sportsmanship — Celebrating others’ successes and showing respect
