Leigham Primary Level 1 New Age Kurling 2022

Wednesday 02nd March 2022 – After being inspired by the Winter Olympics, Year 4 got the opportunity to try out some New Age Kurling for themselves. This target based sport has been adapted from Curling so that it can be played indoors. There are 4 players on a team, all trying to deliver their ‘stone’ towards the very centre of the target by sliding them across the ground. The score is then determined by the number of stones closest to the centre. With the Commonwealth Games coming up later this year, we based todays’ competition on one of their values, Equality. We discussed the importance of fairness, non-discrimination and inclusion in all that we do. First up were Mr. Bradley’s group: all of the children were representing their various House teams and we played a round-robin style event so that every team played each other. While the scores were being tallied, we played an individual challenge game where everyone played for themselves, aiming to be the very closest to the centre – if they achieved this, they sat on the throne and presided over the game until they were knocked off the target. In the second session, Mrs Mckeon-Carter’s group got their chance to play for their House and then all of the scores were combined… Congratulations to the Yellow team who were our overall New Age Kurling champions this morning! Congratulations as well to the Blue team who were a very close runner up with just 1 point difference. Well done to everyone who took part today, I hope you all enjoyed it and have been inspired to try other alternative activities. Check out the line-up for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 to see what exciting sports are going to be highlighted.
