The long-awaited return of one of our biggest events of the year, the PSSP Primary Indoor Rowing Festival, was welcomed by staff and students from all schools. Due to covid-19, this event didn’t run last year, however the partnership continued to deliver our Indoor Rowing programme. We delivered to around 30 schools which allowed schools some practice and training for this event!
Children arrived at 12:30 for a 13:00 start, each school brought 4 girls and 4 boys that each had an individual competition and then at the end they would all compete together in a team race. The first race of the afternoon was the minor school’s boy’s races. Schools were split into 3 categories that were minor, inter and major depending on the number of children on roll in KS2. Whilst some children were racing, there were also some background activities happening that included stack cups, long jump, speed bounce, hotseat basketball and also some Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games activities.
Children raced for two minutes each, both boys and girls with some very impressive scores. Once the individual races were concluded, all the children competed in the team races that were 4 minutes long, each child rowed for 30 seconds each. Throughout the day there were some really close races and even the following records were broken!
Minor Boys 2-minute race – 456m – Wembury Primary
Minor Girls 2-minute race – 450m – College Road
Marjor Boys 2-minute race – 487m – Hyde Park
Intermediate Overall - 4213m – Oreston
Children who featured in the top 3 in their categories were awarded certificates and 1st place also was awarded a medal.
A huge thank you and well done to all the children who took part and also a big thank you to the young leaders from Devonport High School for Boys who were in charge of the background activities - you did a fabulous job!
