Drake Target Sports Taster 29.06.2021

Have you ever had one of those days when you think, wow, I love my job?! I had one today! This morning I got to work with some amazing children from Y3/4 & 5 at Drake Primary School.

We were focusing on target sports today, so we started with some Boccia with some groups from Y3 & Y5 and some New Age Kurling with a group from Y4.

Boccia is a Paralympic sport, similar to bowls, where teams compete to get their coloured balls closer to the ‘jack’ ball than the opposing team.

New Age Kurling has been adapted from Curling to be played indoors on a flat surface. Teams take turns to deliver ‘stones’ towards the target to try to get closer to the centre than the opposition. Both sports require accuracy, control, and tactics.

First off, we learned the skills and rules and then applied them in a friendly competition. We didn’t record any scores today as we agreed that sometimes it is not about winning or losing, it is more important to have some fun and learn something new. I was very impressed by how quickly all groups picked up the skills! At the end of the morning, we finished with another challenge for the Y5 group: we asked each of them to demonstrate their leadership skills by running the games and refereeing the Boccia – I’m pretty sure they did a better job than me!

I had such a great time today – thank you Drake Primary and Mrs Phillips for arranging such lovely children for me to work with – I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.
