Plympton St. Maurice Y6 Kurling 14.06.2021

Another exciting afternoon of sport at Plympton St. Maurice today as Y6 were introduced to New Age Kurling. This target-based sport has been adapted from curling so that it can be played indoors on a flat surface.

In New Age Kurling, each player delivers a ‘stone’ towards the target at the other end by sliding it smoothly across the floor. The score is then determined by the number of stones closest to the centre of the target. We started off today by learning the rules and skills for kurling and then played as teams, rotating the players each time. Towards the end of the session, we adapted the game so that we played as individuals: each person took their turn and if their stone was closer to the centre of the target than the previous player, they were crowned as royalty for that court.

The afternoon certainly got more competitive at this point. With 5 minutes to go, we upped the ante again by saying that whoever was on the throne at the end of the session, all others must concede and bow to their new Kurling ruler. I cannot say for certain, but there may have been a little bit of cheating going on as Mrs Chiman mysteriously ending up winning! All in all, a fun afternoon learning a new game. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.
