What an exciting morning of sport today at Yealmpstone Farm: teams from Y5 and Y6 were introduced to the Paralympic sport of New Age Kurling.
This target-based sport has been adapted from curling so that it can be played indoors, on a flat surface. In New Age Kurling, each player delivers a ‘stone’ towards the target at the other end by sliding it smoothly across the floor. The score is then determined by the number of stones closest to the centre of the target.
Y6 were up first and took to it like naturals! They were so accurate from the very beginning and it made for some interesting games with lots of tactics employed to knock the other teams’ stones off the target.
Y5 were next and we had a lot of fun with a ‘Winner stays on Challenge’ – the aim being to get your individual stone closest to the centre without anyone else knocking you off.
All in all, it was a fun morning learning how to play a new game. As well as learning new skills, we also discussed the importance of sportsmanship when we take part in events. We looked at the School Games value of Respect and how it could relate to the game we were playing. We decided that whether you win or lose, it is important to show the other team respect and all the teams certainly did that today.
Well done to all who took part today, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.
