Disc Golf Festival 04.07.2019

What an incredible day of sport at Plympton Academy! 100 children from PSSP Primary schools across the city came along to take part in our annual Disc Golf Festival.

In partnership with the amazing team from Flyers Disc Golf, we host this event every year to provide an opportunity for young people to try something new and have a great day being active and having a lot of fun. We had 10 schools with us over the day, each with 2 teams—Bickleigh Down, Chaddlewood, Eggbuckland Vale, Leigham, Mary Dean’s, Old Priory, Plympton St. Maurice, Thornbury, Tor Bridge Primary and Yealmpstone Farm.

On arrival, all teams were registered and introduced to some technique and skills by Jez. Once we had all had a couple of practice putting shots, it was off on to the course. There were 12 holes to complete in total and each team started on a different hole so that we had a ‘shot-gun’ start.

We could not have asked for a more perfect day with the weather—the sun was shining and there was hardly any breeze at all to send the discs off course. All of the children got the hang of it really quickly and were putting their new skills to the test—the overall aim being to be the team with the lowest score overall. Alongside the childrens’ event, we also had a competition for the staff—if I am not mistaken , I think this gets more competitive each year! There were several prestigious categories to compete for: overall winning team; lowest scoring boy; lowest scoring girl and lowest scoring female and male staff.

It was fantastic to see so many children taking part and enjoying being outside taking part and competiting. We had some fierce competition for the winning team with only 7 points in it at the end of the day: huge congratulations to ‘Yealmpstone Farm Super Stars’ who took the top spot and to ‘Leigham Lions’ who were a close second. It was also incredibly close for the overall lowest scoring boy—just 1 point in it! Congratulations to Dexter (Bickleigh Down—’Stein’s Superheroes’) who won it for the boys and to Ellie (from the same team) who won it for the girls.

As expected, the staff competition was equally as fierce: Congratulations to Mr. Baker and Miss Wafer from Yealmpstone Farm as they both took the top spots—have you been practicing at school?! Well done to all of our winners—I have already been around and delivered your prizes so I hope that you enjoy them. I would like to say a huge thank you to Jez for all of his hard work helping me to make this the best event possible.

If this event has inspired you to take part, head down to Central Park or over to Mount Edgcumbe to check out the courses that Flyers Disc Golf have there. Thank you all for coming along, I hope you all enjoyed the event as much as I did and I hope to see you all there next year.
