The Role Physical Education can play in promoting Personal Development

The release of Ofsted’s consultation inspection framework has been received warmly by many practitioners, particularly in the physical education sector; where practitioners can see an opportunity to not only champion their subject in the work we know it already does in developing the whole person, but also the opportunity it provides to reconsider the purpose and value of physical education and consider the content, approach and pedagogy that goes with it.

The separating of personal development from behaviour and attitudes is great news for PE and school sport. Under the proposals, the ‘Quality of Education’ a school provides has greater emphasis than their internal data and there will be a focus on the learning experiences available to pupils. This is wider than the curriculum and timetabled lessons.

Through the curriculum, inspectors will be looking at the three I’s; intention, implementation and impact. So where are you and your school in being able to demonstrate how the PE you teach, the opportunities you offer in physical activity and the sport available contributes to the personal development of your pupils? What additional learning opportunities and enrichment activities are available and what impact do you see them having on the personal development of the pupils in your school?

The PSSP and the opportunities that we provide will ensure that we can support schools to address these questions and make the necessary changes.
