Ofsted Inspection Framework; Good News for PE

Ofsted has published a draft inspection framework for 2019 which set out how it proposes to inspect schools, further education and skills provision and registered early years settings.

“This proposed new framework from Ofsted is good news for PE and school sport, and their place in a broad and balanced curriculum. In recent years, physical education has been a victim of inspections placing too much weight on exam results. We know from our own research that almost two-in-five secondary schools have cut time for PE since 2012.

“The greater emphasis these guidelines place on quality of education and personal development is something that we have long called for and fully support. It represents a welcome step to recognising the essential role that PE, sport and physical activity play in a good and well-rounded education - enhancing children’s health, building character, improving wellbeing and supporting them to fulfil their potential. At a time when young people’s health and wellbeing has been in decline, this could not be more crucial.

“We believe this framework could go further still in placing a greater focus on how schools are supporting young people’s metal health and wellbeing. It should also aim to do more to set out how it will help narrow the gap in quality of education between disadvantaged young people and their more advantaged peers.

“Ahead of these new guidelines being implemented in September, Ofsted should set out how the good intentions of this framework will translate into an inspection process which genuinely champions a broad and balanced curriculum for all young people.”

Ofsted Chief Inspector Amanda Spielman will be addressing the 2019 Youth Sport Trust Annual Conference on 28 February at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry. More information about the conference.
