Secondary Inclusive Football 24.01.18

Our first inclusive football event for this academic year and what a fantastic turn out again! We had 9 teams come along today to take part and compete for the top spot.  In all of the years that I have been running this event, we have never had weather quite like we did today!  Despite the torrential conditions, teams from Stoke Damerel, St. Boniface, Hele’s, Plympton Academy and Marine Academy all came along to take part in our friendly competition.

As well as being a chance to play and celebrate the ability of the young people in our schools, this festival is also about celebrating outstanding values of sportsmanship and the School Games values of Respect, Determination and Team Work. At the end of the event the teacher from each of the schools is asked to nominate just one of their students to receive a special medal for impressing them with their attitude and behaviour towards their own teams and others. This is always such an unenviable task as all of the young people behave with impeccable sportsmanship and manners throughout. Congratulations if you were the lucky recipient of this award today – you must have really impressed your teachers!

This is a round robin event with a score of 5 points for a win, 3 points for a draw and 1 point for any loss. The overall table of results (below) show just how close things were at the end – 2 distinct ties! Congratulations to St. Boniface ‘A’ team who were our overall winners today having won all of their games and well done to Stoke Damerel ‘B’ team who were a very close second. There was a tie for 3rdplace but Stoke Damerel took it in the end after we worked out the total number of goals scored by each team throughout the competition.

Well done to everyone who took part today, there was some fantastic football being played despite the deluge. I would like to say a huge thank you to the young leaders from Stoke Damerel who endured the freezing, wet conditions with us to referee and score all of the games. I would also like to thank the teachers who stepped in to help referee on the last pitch and also for bringing your teams along – I know it was all for the students that you ventured out today – so on behalf of your teams as well – thank you. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at our next event on Wednesday 07thMarch.
