Primary Inclusive Football 17.01.2018

Another fantastic turnout for our termly Primary Inclusive Football festival at Goals.  8 teams came along this morning to take part in our friendly and inclusive event.  We had children representing schools from across the city today; Dunstone, The Cathedral School, Woodford, Riverside, Compton, St. Peters RC, Yealmpstone Farm and Cann Bridge.

Although all of the teams are competing to be the overall winners on the day, we also take this opportunity to celebrate respect through football. Everyone who takes part receives a certificate at the end of the morning but there is also an unenviable task for each of the teachers; it falls to them to chose one person from each of their teams to receive a special medal for displays of sportsmanship, determination and of course, respect and it is always so difficult to pick just one.

Our round robin festival works on a point system – 5 points for a win, 3 points for a draw and 1 point for a loss; the team with the most points overall are our champions for the day.

Unfortunately, we had to finish our tournament a little bit early today; having completed most of the games, the heavens opened and down came a very icy downpour.  We thought that we would persevere, but as it started stinging we all made a run for shelter.  This did mean that we could not fairly calculate the overall scores as some teams had played one less game then others – so in the spirit of respect again – we called it an 8 team draw.  No one seemed to mind as we had still managed to play loads of games before the rain came.

Well done to all of you who played today, there were some fantastic footballers out there and even more important, some excellent team work! I would like to say a huge thank you to the young leaders from Stoke Damerel Community College who did a brilliant job as always at refereeing and scoring and thank you to Mr. Thomas for arranging them for me. Thank you to all of the staff that sent/brought their teams along – I hope that you all enjoy these events as much as I do. I look forward to seeing you all at another event very soon.
