Tor Bridge Family Basketball 14.11.17

An event with a bit of a difference this afternoon here at Tor Bridge High.  Instead of our normal competitive format, we focused on learning something new, making new friends and skill development. We had 5 fantastic young leaders from our 6th Form along to lead some skills and activities based around the fundamentals of Basketball and were also very lucky to have 2 enthusiastic volunteers from Plymouth University – Kat and Lucy.

At 2pm a group of children from Leigham Primary and a group from Tor Bridge Primary came along to the sports hall to be introduced to the afternoon ahead of them. To celebrate one of the fantastic School Games Values, our focus this afternoon was on Team Work - but we were going to make things a little more challenging then they all first thought.

On arrival the children from both schools were mixed in to 3 separate teams; their challenge was to take part and learn lots of new skills but they also had to get to know each other, work together and find out at least 2 new names. Each group took part in a different skill based activity for 20 mins before moving on to the next.

The young leaders introduced them to dribbling, shooting and passing as well as some of the rules. Kat and Lucy supported different groups, helping them to get to know someone new and to help with the various skills. It was great to see children from different schools mixing so quickly and soon showing off some excellent team work.

After a quick drink break we got into some game play; with the young leaders refereeing, the children put all of their new found skills to the test. We were lucky enough to have a visit from one of the Plymouth Raiders coaches, Danny Stevens and one of their players, Kinu Rochford came along in time to see our groups in action; they were impressed by the team work and by how quickly they had all picked up the rules of the game.

Danny and Kinu stayed to present all of the children who took part today with a special certificate and a sticker to celebrate Team Work.

Well done to all of you who took part today – we hope that you all enjoyed it. I would like to say a personal thank you to Danny and Kinu for coming along but also to our fantastic young leaders for all of their hard work (Kian, Josh, Tom, Calvin and Jordan) and to Kat and Lucy who volunteered their time to work with us.

Well done everyone – it was a great afternoon of sport and team work.
