Plymouth International Chorus 28.06.2017

On Wednesday the 28th of June, students from schools from Plymouth here in Devon and Plymouth in Massachussets (USA) that form the Plymouth International Chorus, attended an afternoon of sports at the Plymouth Life Centre.  All participants were united through sport and had the chance to make new friendships.

Over one hundred and fifty young athletes took part in the afternoon, and they were split into eighteen different teams to compete against each other in the sporting activities. The winning team with the highest overall score were given a PSSP Gold medal.  Each American student was given a Plymouth School Sports Partnership lanyard and their staff were given little pin badges with the Plymouth School Sports Partnership logo on it.

The students are part of the ‘Mayflower 400’ project which is a celebration of the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower from Plymouth, UK to Plymouth, Massachusetts.

All participants put in a great amount of effort and showed respect to one and another at all times, as well as showing passion and enjoyment while undertaking each activity.

Karen York, a teacher at Manadon Vale Primary School said "The afternoon was superbly organised and led by Howard and his DHSG team – great resources, fantastic multi-skill games/challenges and competent/enthusiastic girls leading the various stations. The children absolutely loved it and we were amazed by their enthusiasm and energy levels after a busy week of rehearsals etc, which was testament to how much fun it was!  It was wonderful to see the American and British children immediately fully interacting with each other…this is what we had been so keen to achieve. Music and sport are, as we know, universal languages and fantastic vehicles for such international/cultural links. New friendships were certainly made during the afternoon, not just between the two Plymouth choirs, but also between children from different primary schools."

Jess Rowe, a teacher at Montpelier Primary School also commented that "The choice of activities was perfect and it was wonderful to see the children mixing so well. Yesterday afternoon, through the activities, the children were no longer from 2 countries and countless schools, but bonded as the Plymouth International Chorus."

A massive thank you to Howard Turner for a superbly organised event with support from our PSSP Apprentices, Hayley and Jazmin!  We would like to give a big thank you to Devonport High School for Girls Sports Leaders and to Miss Clatworthy for helping run the activities and showing great leadership skills of young ambassadors.

Well done to everyone that attended the day!
