Primary Disc Golf Festival 2017

Friday 09th June 2017—What an incredible afternoon of sport at Plympton Academy! Over 120 children from primary schools across the city came along today to take part in our annual Disc Golf Festival. In partnership with the amazing guys from Flyers Disc Golf, we host this event every year to provide an opportunity for young people to try something new and have a great day out being active and hopefully having a lot of fun.

We had 6 schools with us for the morning all with 2 teams each; Tor Bridge Primary, Glen Park, Austin Farm, Plympton St. Maurice, Old Priory and Leigham and another 12 teams in the afternoon—Thornbury, Bickleigh Down, Woodford, Chaddlewood, Yealmpstone Farm and Boringdon.

As the teams arrived they were given some expert instruction from Scott and Jez from Flyers Disc Golf and then each team headed off to their first of 12 holes to put their new skills to the test (and compete against the wind –although we were not complaining at all about the weather considering all of the rain that we had in the previous few days!).

Each team started on a different hole and did their best to get the lowest score possible. There were several prestigious categories to compete for: overall winning team; lowest scoring boy; lowest scoring girl and even a staff event. It was fantastic to see so many children taking part and enjoying the sport. We had some fierce competition for the winning team with only 1 point in it in the end between first and second spot; Boringdon ‘A’ team were the overall winners on the day with a score of 252 points; Old Priory ‘Jaguars’ were right on their heals with 253! A very close third were Woodford ‘6s’ with 255 points. Well done to all of you!  It was also incredibly close for the overall Lowest Scoring Boy and Girl with just a couple of points in it again. Congratulations to Keegan (Woodford 6’s) who took top spot and the prizes for the boys and to Mia (Tor Bridge ‘The Spurs’) who won it for the girls, you will be pleased to know that you were very close to the scores of the adults! Our wining Male Staff went to Mr. Abraham (Thornbury) with an impressive score of 33.  Is this the second year in a row, Sir? If so, we may need to impose a handicap for you next year! Winning it for the Female Staff was Miss Kearney (Austin Farm) with a very respectable 36 points.

For all other results, please speak to your teachers who have been emailed the spreadsheet. Congratulations to all of our winners who receive a medal and a prize donated by Flyers Disc Golf. Well done as well to everyone who took part, I thought that this year was one of our best yet and I had a fantastic time watching you all have some fun, I can’t wait to start planning for next year and sign you all up again.

I would like to say a huge thank you to Scott and Jez for all of their hard work, to Mr. Rhymer and the staff at Plympton Academy who helped me get everything organised in school and also to our young leaders (names below) who were incredible with the children and really made the event run smoothly, so many of the primary teachers commented on how professional and fantastic you were so well done and thank you. If this event has inspired you to take part, head down to Central Park or over to Mount Edgcumbe to check out the courses that Flyers Disc Golf have there, everyone who took part today received a voucher for a free round so make sure you get your families down there and show them your new skills.

Thank you all so much for coming along, looking forward to seeing you all there next year.
