Plymouth SSP level 2 Tennis

Nine teams entered this years Sainsbury School Games level 2 mini red tennis, the most ever for a year 3/4 event.

On arrival each team were placed in a pool, playing a quick round robin expertly led by leaders from Sir John Hunt CSC and supported by coaches from tennis-mad and SSP team.

Based on results each team were then ranked and moved into either the cup, shield or plate competitions giving every young player the chance to shine once again.

Kings School, Salisbury Road A and Boringdon A entered the cup competition with ease and as all three teams gaining automatic qualification into the Devon Summer Games level 3 it was all down to medals for this group. Salisbury Rd A took first blood beating Kings 3-1, but all was to play for as we went into the final games as Kings took the second game against Boringdon A with the same score. However Salisbury Rd were not going to take their eye off the main prize beating on points after a 2-2 draw with a very close 36-33.

The shield competition was also interesting as although no medals were on offer the winners from the group would gain qualification into the summer games. After Salisbury Road B and Eggbuckland A drew their first game, Pennycross took advantage and won both their games to take full points, forcing Salisbury Rd into 2nd and Eggbuckland A into a respectable third.

Finally the plate competition, and although with no medals or qualification to play for, nothing was going to detract from the quality of play or excitement radiating. Eggbuckland B shone through this time winning both games, whilst Pomphlett managed to beat Boringdon B to take 2nd.

Well done one to all nine teams and a big thank you to our sports leaders and events team.

We now look forward to seeing all our teams at the Summer Games on the 24th June.
