Devon Winter School Games 2013

Although the weather was cold, the atmosphere at this year’s Devon Winter School Games was warm and enthusiastic throughout. Each team competing had qualified through the level 2 games in their local SGO area and this year Plymouth had competitors in every event.

After the opening ceremony which saw stunt bike displays by the Andrei Burton crew and a cheerleading performance from our very own Plymstock School elite the teams made their way to the various events in the now famous Plymouth yellow which could be seen from every point.

At level 3 all the events were fierce and close but none more so than the year nine Basketball as after extra time Ridgeway were beating the semi finals by Ivybridge by one point after extra time. They did however go on to take third place overall and one of the Sainsbury School Games bronze medals. This was replicated in the High5 Netball when Compton, who had won all of their pool games, were beaten by Sidmouth primary in the final again after extra time.

Eggbuckland College fared slightly better taking first and third in the boys volleyball.

In all the day was a great event, run by the regions School Games organisers and Active Devon but it was down to the young leaders and officials, some of which from Plymstock school, who made the day.

Well done to all our qualifying schools, level two events for the summer games will now commence after the Easter break.
