Level 3 School Games Athletics 2013

First came the local heats and then the Plymouth level 2 finals and now after months of preparation and coaching it was time for the level 3 Devon county event.

Sportshall athletics has been growing rapidly over the years and encourages athletes to take part in a number of track and field events giving them a chance to enjoy new disciplines whilst at the same time competing for the Devon School Games crown.

First up were the under 13’s and with four Plymouth teams competing against 12 others from around the county it was fast and furious from the very first starters whistle. The boys and girls from Stoke Damerel CC (Plymouth gold medal winners) were joined by DHS, Eggbuckland CC and Ridgeway all of whom and showed massive potential in the level 2 event. Once again the teams of 12 jumped threw and ran their way through the numerous events which included relays, endurance events and shot putt to name a few until it came to the final races and of course the nervous wait to see who had finished in the medal positions.

The under 13 event which follows the national format is split into a separate boys and girls event with each gender competing for the championship. First up the girls and after a short wait the results were read out. Unfortunately the four Plymouth schools didn’t fare to well finishing in 7th, 10th, 11thand 15thhowever the boys fared much better with Stoke Damerel taking the coveted School Games gold medal followed by Eggbuckland in 4th, DHS in 5thand Ridgeway in 12th.

Overall St Peters Exeter took the Level 3 crown with a massive 862 points with the Plymouth schools finishing in 7th, 8th, 9thand 12th(for full results see the attached under 13 resource).

The under 11 event which had started with training back in September last year was much more successful for the four Plymouth teams which this year were Hyde Park juniors, Elburton, Old Priory and Widewell. Again the teams of young athletes jumped, threw and ran their way through the many disciplines which this time saw lots of different relays along with the newly introduced soft javelin and the leap testing vertical jump. All four Plymouth teams had some great results throughout the day however some early errors including batons dropped during races allowed some of the other Devon teams to stay in touch. The final races saw some of the top teams compete in a runoff taking each other on in the 4 x 1 relays.

Again after a nervous wait the results were completed and read out in reverse order from 16thto 1st. Widewell took a very respectable 11thwith 358 points whilst Old Priory took 6thwith 450. As the other team names were read out we eventually got down to the top three with two Plymouth teams still to go. Elburton took third with a massive 554 team points just beaten to the silver medals by Newport primary in North Devon who scored 562, however this left just one team to be crowned Devon champions which were the unbeatable Hyde Park Juniors who scored a record breaking 616 team points.

Well done to all the athletes’ involved and big thank you to Sportshall UK for running the level 3 event with the excellent assistance of students from UCP Marjon and leaders from Stoke Damerel CC.
