  • PSSP Spirit of the Games Rowing 2025

    Published 30/06/25

Thursday 26th June 2025 – Oh my goodness! What a phenomenal day! Today was our 2nd ‘Spirit of the Games Rowing’ challenge, supporting the Strength of Spirit Games on Plymouth Hoe. Each year the British Armed Forces, supported by Plymouth City Council and sponsored by Aecom & the Royal Marines Charity, host a rehabilitation traiathlon for veterans of the armed forces. The Plymouth School Sports Partnership opened the days’ activities with a competitive Rowing event for choldren from military fanilies.  6 children from each school were invited along to take part in 3 different challenges: a 100m sprint/a 2 minute row and a 6 minute team relay challenge. We had an incredible 23 Primary schools participating today. We were supported by an amazing group of sports leaders from Devonport High School for Girls: they greeted the teams on arrival and took them through some individual warm ups and some technique before we got started. The atmosphere was electric! So much excitement and energy, it was brilliant! Before we knew it we were underway and the results were coming in thick and fast.  Once all of the races were completed and the numbers were being crunched our sports leaders gave every child who participated their very own medal, certificate (kindly sponsored by Aecom) and a goodie bag (courtesy of Samworth Brothers), then they were able to spend some time exploring some of the other activities on offer, such as a taster of a Field Gun event and air-soft shooting range– there was so much to see and do. Then it was off to the main stage to announce our winners… Congratulations to Phoebe from Ford Primary and Olly from Old Priory Junior Academy for Rowing the 100m in the fastest times and to Kira and Caleb – both from Keyham Barton Primary for Rowing the greatest distance in 2 minutes. To calculate the overall winning team, we combined all of their teams’ individual distances over 2 minutes with their team relay distance. A huge congratulations to the team from Plympton St. Maurice Primary who were the overall winners on the day and the recipients of the coveted shield! Well done to everyone who took part today, I am thrilled that there were so many smiling faces. Our schools were then invited to stay for a packed lunch and to enjoy more of the activities laid on for them. I would like to say a huge thank you to some very special people who helped significantly to make this event such a success: firstly to the sports leaders from DHSG and their teachers – you were amazing and the children had the best time; to my colleagues Jan and Anna for all their help and support throughout the day; to Sophie for once again being my right-hand person doing the important job of working out the scores; for our very generous sponsor Aecom for their support and Samworth Brothers for their treats for the children and leaders; Plymouth City Council and the British Armed forces – thank you all so much. I’m so excited to do it all again next year!

Wednesday 18th June 2025 – Today was our last PSSP Inclusion Football event for this academic year – and what a way to finish. We had glorious sunshine and 5 teams attending, representing Cann Bridge, Courtlands, Pennycross, Yealmpstone Farm and Leigham Primary. I say this every year and it remains true – these are some of my favourite events of our whole calendar. It is just so fantastic to see how the children go from nervous on arrival to beaming smiles and red faces after just the first game. Once again I am so incredibly grateful to the amazing team of Sports Leaders from Stoke Damerel – they have supported us all year and are brilliant with refereeing, scoring and with the children in general. Thank you to Miss Crowe and Miss Plumpton for arranging this great team for us. This event is a round-robin so every school gets to play all of the others. 5 points are awarded for a win, 3 points for a draw and 1 point for a loss. Once all of the games are played, the scores are collated and we present the children with their certificates on the main pitch. Congratulations to Yealmpstone Farm who were our overall winners today. Well done to everyone who took part – I really hope that you all sign up to next years’ program of dates – they are in the planning stage right now. Keep an eye on the PSSP website and get booking. I hope to see you all soon.

  • PSSP Secondary & Special Schools Football

Wednesday 11th June 2025 – Our final PSSP Secondary Inclusion Football event for this academic year and what a way to finish. We had 6 teams in attendance today, representing Plympton Academy, Devonport High School for Girls, Devonport High School for Boys, Coombe Dean and Tor Bridge High. Nearly 40 students came along this morning to take part in our friendly tournament which focuses on Teamwork, Respect and fun. We have a slightly different format that we utilise to support one player on each team: down either side of the pitch, we create a channel which means that 1 player can play unopposed and support their team from there. This works incredibly well to develop confidence and as a team tactic. Throughout the morning we use a round-robin format so that each team gets to play everyone else. 5 points are awarded for a win/ 3 points for a draw and 1 point for a loss. Once all of the matches are complete, we tally the scores, announce the results and everyone receives a well-earned certificate. Congratulations to Devonport High for Boys who were the overall winners today with Coombe Dean hot on their heals in the runners up position. Well done to everyone who played, I really hope you enjoyed it and would be keen to come back. I would like to say a very special thank you to the Sports Leaders from Stoke Damerel - you have been with me all year and have been incredible with both the Primary and Secondary age group events – thank you for helping to make these events so special for so many children/students – and thank you to Miss Crowe and Miss Plumpton for arranging this for me. The dates for next year are already in the pipeline so I look forward to seeing you all in September.

  • Primary Inclusion Archery June 2025

    Published 09/06/25

Friday 06th June 2025 – What an exciting morning of sport at Old Priory Junior Academy. I had the pleasure of working with the Y5 Sports Leaders today to get them ready to deliver our PSSP Primary Inclusion Archery event. 7 teams from PSSP schools across the city came along to take part in our fun festival for children in mainstream and special schools. Children from Cann Bridge, Old Priory, Leigham, Pomphlett, Chaddlewood, St. Matthew’s and Elburton all came along to learn some new skills and compete in different personal challenge-style events. As each team arrived, they were introduced to the young leaders they would be working with all morning, and they were taken through the key points of how to use the equipment; after a few quick practice arrows, we were straight into the competition with each child having 3 chances to score as highly as possible with 3 arrows. Instead of competing against others, this personal challenge event is designed to encourage children to improve at their own individual pace – striving to score more points with 3 arrows over several rounds. While they were waiting for their turn, there were archery worksheets for the children to complete and a ‘school crest’ challenge which resulted in some very creative designs. After the highest score competition, each of the leaders took their group through some fun games and challenges. I would like to say a huge thank you to our leaders today – you were fantastic with the children and really ensured that they all had a great time! Thank you as well to Ms. Roberts for all of her help in organising this event. Thank you to all the staff that brought their teams along today – I hope that you enjoyed watching our new archers as much as I did. I look forward to seeing you all at another event very soon.

  • PSSP Special Schools NEW AGE KURLING

    Published 02/06/25

Thursday 15th May 2025 – We had a fun morning today at Courtlands with an exclusive event for our PSSP special schools. 2 teams from Cann Bridge and 2 from Courtlands took part in a New Age Kurling event aimed at building confidence, learning new skills and fostering social connections. Played in it's original form, New Age Kurling is a target-based sport that has been adapted from curling so that it can be played indoors, on a flat surface. Each player delivers a ‘stone’ towards the target at the other end by sliding it smoothly across the floor. The score is then determined by the number of stones closest to the centre of the target. To ease us all in to the event, we played against the other team from our own school to start with and then mixed things up throughout the morning so that we had the chance to play everyone else as well. It soon became clear that we had some hidden talent amongst our children with many succeeding in landing their stone right on the centre of the target – we all cheered each time it happened so the hall was buzzing with excitement. Before we knew it the morning had flown by. I had such a great time and I really hope everyone who took part today or supported their children did too. Thank you to Courtlands for hosting the event. I am already looking forward to our next PSSP Inclusion event – check out the website to see what it coming up.

  • Plympton Family Y1 Cricket 2025

    Published 02/06/25

Thursday 22nd May 2025 - Another exciting morning at Plympton Academy today as our sports leaders hosted our annual Y1 Cricket festival. We had 4 teams today: Chaddlewood x2, Plympton Plympton St. Maurice and Boringdon. Prior to their arrival, the sports leaders completed their training so they were ready to welcome our guests and get them underway immediately.

First off, the leaders organised a warm up game for each team which is designed to develop their fielding skills and an awareness of when they need to chase the ball. After that, it was on to batting skills and learning when/how to score runs. Then it was time to get competitive… In a variation of Kwik Cricket, we looked at how many runs each school could score as a team over 3 rounds. It was fantastic to see so many children enjoying playing and having so much fun with their team mates. The more we played, the more everyone improved and soon there were some high scores coming in. There were quite a few superstars in our midst as well so we will be signposting to our local Cricket clubs!  At the end of the event we said a huge thank you to the Plympton Academy sports leaders and everyone who took part received a well-deserved certificate. Congratulations to all of the children taking part today – what fantastic team work – we hope that you all enjoyed it. I can’t wait for our next event – check out the PSSP website to see what is coming up.

  • PSSP Dance Festival 2025

    Published 23/05/25

On Wednesday 21st May 7 schools attended the Life Centre to take part in the PSSP Dance Festival. This year we had 20 routines polished and ready to perform, all linking to this years show these being 'Around the world'. The schools interpreted the theme in various different ways, celebrating different countries and culture and portraying events happing around the world.

The pupils had been working so hard on their routines, with many starting back in October!

On the day, they learnt the opening routine, taught by the wonderful Dance Leaders from Notre Dame and Plympton Academy. Prior to the event, the leaders were trained and learnt the principles of dance, choreography, leadership and adaptability when working with primary pupils. They then created the pieces of dance which they taught to the schools at the festival.

Despite a technical delay, all pupils remained calm, professional and quiet; representing their schools impeccably. They all smashed their routines and the smiles on their faces whilst performing was amazing. For many, it was their first time performing in front of an audience, but you wouldn't have been able to tell!

The atmosphere was electric as the children came on in their groups for the final bow. A huge well done to everyone and a BIG thank you to staff and Dance leaders for making the performance run so smoothly.

We look forward to seeing what next years festival will bring!

Wednesday 30th April 2025 – What a scorcher for our termly PSSP Inclusion Football event. 5 teams attended to compete in our friendly tournament aimed at promoting teamwork, respect and having lots of fun. Represented today were Cann Bridge, Courtlands, Pennycross, Montpelier and Keyham Barton – all of the children arrived excited and a little nervous but keen to get going. After a brief welcome, they were soon off to their pitches ready to play. I am incredibly fortunate at these events to have the outstanding support from the Sports Leaders at Stoke Damerel Secondary School – they referee and score all of the games but also support the children/teams and are absolutely brilliant at it! This event is a round-robin  so every school gets to play all of the others. 5 points are awarded for a win, 3 points for a draw and 1 point for a loss. Once all of the games are played, the scores are collated and we present the children with their certificates on the main pitch. Congratulations to Montpelier who were our overall winners today. Well done to everyone who took part, I really hope you enjoyed it as much as I did and would be keen to come back again. Check out the PSSP website for more upcoming Inclusion events.

  • Plympton Family KS1 Multi Skills Festival 2025

    Published 30/04/25

Tuesday 29th April 2025 – Today our team of Sports Leaders from Plympton Academy hosted 4 teams of children from our local primary schools. Chaddlewood and Plympton St. Maurice both sent along 2 teams, consisting of children from Foundation, Y1 and Y2 to take part in our friendly (yet competitive) Multi Skills Festival. Lots of excited (and slightly nervous) children took over our sports hall to try numerous activities and hopefully have a lot of fun. The activities range from tests of skill and accuracy with the Bean Bag Throw; team events such as a Sprint Relay and Ladder Relay; speed and agility with the Speed Bounce and even a test of strength with the Chest Push challenge. There were so many smiling faces in the hall this morning, it was fantastic to see so many children enjoying being physically active and challenged. I would like to say a huge thank you to our leaders – you really made the children feel welcome and enjoy all of the events – nothing but smiles and red faces. At the end of the event, the scores were all collated and the results announced… Congratulations to ‘Chaddlewood A’ team who were the overall winners today and ‘Plympton St. Maurice B’ who were very close runners up. Well done to everyone who took part today, we really hope you enjoyed it and would be keen to come back again.

  • Tor Bridge Family Tag Rugby 2025

    Published 25/04/25

Thursday 24th April 2025 – This afternoon 4 teams (3 from St. Matthew’s and 1 from Thornbury) came along to Tor Bridge High to take part in our annual non-competitive coaching festival. Today’s focus was not on winning but on helping children to develop their Tag Rugby skills and team work ahead of the PSSP competition later in the term. We had a real mix of experience in the teams but we had the talented Sports Leader Casey on hand to coach and lead the games – huge thank you Casey! All of the teams had the opportunity to play against each other but our super referee and teachers were encouraged to coach throughout and take the opportunity to spot those consistent errors and work on them. I really enjoyed today’s event – no pressure of the win just children enjoying being physically active and playing sport with their friends. For some of our children it was brushing up on their skills and for some, today was about learning something new and getting used to the many Tag Rugby laws. Well done to everyone who took part today, I hope you enjoyed it and best of luck in future competitions.
