Schools Challenge 29/05/10

A very wet and windy day saw over 1200 young athletes finish their 13.1 mile run with a 1.1 mile loop around the Plymouth Hoe. With heavy rain in the morning we thought that we had escaped the worst of it but just as the 29 schools and all their young runners arrived the heavens opened again.

However no matter how heavy the rain fell this couldn’t dampen the spirits of the runners who had run the previous 12 miles on their school play grounds and fields by running a mile a week.

The event started with a mass wake and shake warm up lead by Jane Dorwick and students from Beechwood primary school and then at 3 o’clock on the dot cannons at the Plymouth Citadel signalled the start of the main run.

All the young athletes who were wearing their bright yellow schools challenge t shirts finished in under 15 minutes with some coming in below the 7 minute mark, all of which received a goody bag and special schools challenge medal on crossing the line.

Each athlete will now receive a half marathon medal for completing the half marathon distance which will be presented in a school assembly.

Many schools were also raising money for this year’s chosen charity the Motor Neurone Disease Association. We hope that final figures will show that we have raised over £2000 for this very worthy cause.

A big well done to all who took part, those who raised money and all who helped on the day from the MND association, Plymouth city council sports development, the half marathon company and of course from the partnership itself.
