Recall on illegal starting pistols – please circulate to all your schools
On April 16th 2010, the Association of Chief Police Officers announced that the Olympic 380 BBM imitation handgun had been reclassified as a prohibited weapon and it was illegal to possess one of these handguns. Despite this being the most commonly used handgun in athletics utilised by starters in schools and clubs, UKA was not involved in any discussion on the impact this decision will have on our sport.
A public amnesty will take place until 4th June, thereafter anyone in possession of one of these handguns will be liable to prosecution under the firearms legislation. There is no public funding to recompense those who surrender the hand guns.
However, UKA senior management has decided that it will issue a replacement gun if the offending gun is handed in, to one of a list of approved agents and accompanied by a letter from the club/school stating that the holder is still active as a starter.
A list of these regionally based agents is available via UKA from David Brown dbrown@uka.org.uk, 0161 223 4246
Following an inquest into the tragic death of a 12 year-old hockey goal keeper, the England Hockey Board have written to the YST asking us to communicate the key learning points to those involved in the delivery of hockey within schools to prevent such incidences from occurring in future.
For information, the findings of the inquest were as follows:
Following the incident, two hockey goalkeeper helmets were withdrawn by manufacturers. These were the Gray 200 helmet and the TK GX5.
The inquest highlighted the need for proper helmet care.
Always check helmets for damage;
Always read the instructions for each helmet to ensure it is appropriate for the age of the players, the weight of the ball being used, and the drills being undertaken; Make sure helmets fit properly;
Implement a proper helmet replacement cycle – every 3 -5 years depending on usage and condition.
The inquest considered the nature of the drill being undertaken at the time of the incident. It is standard practice for us all to make sure drills are performed in a safe environment; however, we must also ensure they are correctly supervised by appropriately qualified staff.
More information can be found in the document Safe Practice in Physical Education and School Sport – in particular paragraph four – which gives good advice concerning the issue of supervision together with the level of competence, in relation to hockey.
