With four teams progressing through from the Plymouth finals it was now time to take on 12 other teams from around the county in the Devon primary Sportshall festival. Each team consisted of six boys and six girls as in the Plymouth heats and finals but this time each athlete had to take part in a maximum of three track and three field events some of which were brand new to this level of competition.
Events included the over and under relay a test of speed and agility, soft javelin, vertical jump and the very technical triple jump. Each field event had three pools with each athlete pitting themselves against 15 other competitors.
The competition got off to a flying start with the obstacle relay and all four Plymouth teams came out on top in their heats. This form continued throughout the day with many athletes picking up first and second places. At the interim point all four teams were placed nicely at the top holding off strong competition from North and South Devon teams.
In the end it came down to the deciding event which was the 4 x 1 lap relay for both the boys and girls and then the tension mounted as the athletes were brought into the middle of the arena to find out the final scores.
By the time it got to the top ten still no Plymouth schools had been mentioned, top eight and still nothing and the results were getting closer and closer until sixth place, Elburton were announced with 466 points, then fifth, Widey Court with 480 points, then fourth and third went by so we knew we had the top two teams. Finally it was announced in second place the top placed Sir John Hunt School Sports Partnership team Montpellier with a massive 558 points and then in first a big well done to the top placed Plymstock School Sports Partnership team Hyde Park with a very impressive 610 points.
Well done to all the athletes who took part, this year’s level of competition was very good and will only get better as each year goes by. Also well done to all the team managers, coaches from Plymstock road runners and support staff who helped these athletes in what can only be described as a great year for Plymouth’s indoor athletics teams.
