Over 120 primary pupils this week attended the Plymouth Schools Tennis Championships hosted by the Devonshire Health and Racquets Centre. The event which is organised in partnership with Devon LTA, the Devonshire and the Sir John Hunt Partnership was the first championship of its kind and is set to get bigger next year.
The standard of tennis was very high and all the Schools that entered (Beechwood,Marlborough, St Georges, St Budeaux, Keyham Barton, Riverside, Hyde Park, Compton, Ernesettle and Leigham) should be very proud of their students.
Each team was made up of 4 boys and 4 girls. All students took away a certificate signposting them onto local clubs and over 50 students were offered free tennis lessons at the Devonshire for outstanding performances as part of their Talent ID programme.
Congratulations should go to;
Compton who lifted the trophy in the Year 3 / 4 competition (narrowly beating Hyde Park)
And to
Hyde Park who lifted the trophy in the Year 5/6 competition (narrowly beating Compton!)
To support schools tennis the School Sports Partnership are running a 3 hour course for teachers and TAs in April with all the schools who are in attendance receiving £500 worth of tennis equipment. Details available on our website.
