KS2 Volleyball Inset at Plympton Academy 2017

It was a fantastic turn out on 22nd November for the KS2 Volleyball Staff Inset at Plympton Academy.

Over 30 teachers from different schools came along to extend their knowledge and acquire new skills and resources to deliver Volleyball in their schools.

We were incredibly fortunate to have Matt Rhymer deliver the session; Matt is a PE teacher at Plympton Academy but also the National Head Coach for the England Junior Girls programme so there really was no one better equipped to deliver this session. Matt shared his wealth of knowledge with us all and focused on teaching games for understanding (rather than getting bogged down in the specific skill aspects).

We were introduced to 3 different small sided games which are designed to get children understanding game play, taking part and having fun rather than worrying about whether or not they can dig a ball.

We looked at Volley Sport, Mini Volley and Super Mini Volley as fantastic, instructive games to get children playing. Matt also adapted his session to include working in a smaller space with a large group – we were given ideas on how to manage this and even introduce a leadership element.

I think that I can speak from all who attended when I say that it was a fantastic session; Matt’s depth of subject knowledge is second to none but he also has an incredible understanding of the challenges that teachers face in primary schools.

There are a couple of resources below that may be of use to staff looking to include volleyball into their lessons.

On behalf of us all, thank you Matt – if you want to do a follow up session, we’re in!
