Dunstone “Boccia Buddies” Journey

Back in 2014, pupils from Dunstone Primary School in Plymstock started attending the Boccia sessions run by Claire Crowther.

Boccia, which made its Paralympic Games debut in 1984, is similar to boules and is played either individually or in teams or pairs with the aim of the game to get the ball closest to the jack.

Dunstone students soon found that it was a very enjoyable sport giving them the opportunity to work as a team and meet lots of friendly fellow Boccia teams!  It greatly improved their hand eye co-ordination and was brilliant for their gross motor skills.

"Boccia Buddies" – as the Dunstone team is now known, were overjoyed to achieve a place at the Boccia England U19 County Championships held in Exeter earlier this month! 

The competition hosted teams from all over Devon and was a wonderful experience for the team made up of 9 and 10 year olds!  Winning all but 1 match the Boccia Buddies gained Silver and a place at the Regional Boccia Championships.

The Regional Boccia Championships which saw teams from the south west of England, competing for the coveted award was held last week!  Dunstone Boccia Buddies again represented themselves brilliantly, achieving 4thplace.

Boccia has given Amy, Ryan, Matthew and Kyle an enormous sense of pride and taught them the importance of working in a team whilst experiencing the excitement of competitive sport.
