On Friday 27th January 3 classes of Key Stage 1 children from Austin Farm Primary School helped to pilot and develop our new Key Stage 1 Mobile Fitness Centre. The Learning Outcomes for the sessions were from the National Curriculum Gymnastics Units 1 and 2. Specifically, Year 1; To recognise how your body feels when still and when exercising [Knowledge and understanding of fitness and health] and to watch, copy and describe what you and others have done [Evaluate and improve] Year 2; To recognise and describe what your body feels like during different types of activity [Knowledge and understanding of fitness and health] and to improve your work using information gained by watching, listening and investigating [Evaluate and improve].
The children learnt how to monitor their breathing, heartbeat and temperature before warming up to Music Man from Dance Animation. They then developed their ability to use the special KS1 bikes and rowers as well as jump rope and run on the spot whilst regularly monitoring changes to their bodies. After applying their skills in some timed circuits they did a cool down to Dance Animation's cowboy DVD.
The children had fun and have asked for the centre to come back to their school later in the year. Staff made some good developmental observations which will help to improve the centre. A final pilot is being arranged for February 24th after which schools can book the equipment out via this website.
